Die Nachfrage nach Wärmepumpen als Alternative zu Öl- oder Gasheizungen ist in den letzten 20 Jahren beinahe kontinuierlich gestiegen. Aktuell werden Wärmepumpen in mehr als der Hälfte der neuen Wohngebäude als primäre Heizenergiequelle eingesetzt. 2012 lag der Anteil noch bei unter einem Drittel. Das geht aus Zahlen des Statistischen Bundesamtes hervor, die der Bundesverband Wärmepumpe veröffentlicht hat. Wärmepumpen kommen hauptsächlich in Ein- und Zweifamilienhäusern zum Einsatz, weniger in Mehrfamilienhäusern.
Der Anteil der Wärmepumpen könnte in den kommenden Jahren weiter steigen, denn nach monatelanger Debatte ist am vergangenen Freitag das umstrittene Heizungsgesetz im Bundestag verabschiedet worden. Grundsätzlich sollen dem Gesetz zufolge künftig Heizungen mit einem Anteil von mindestens 65 Prozent Erneuerbarer Energie betrieben werden. Der Einbau von Wärmepumpen ist dabei kein Muss: Neben elektrischen Wärmepumpen und dem Anschluss an ein Fernwärmenetz ist auch der Einbau von Pellet- und Holzheizungen erlaubt. Außerdem ist eine Stromdirektheizung oder eine Heizung auf der Basis von Solarthermie sowie eine Hybridheizung möglich, also eine Kombination aus Erneuerbaren-Heizung und Gas- oder Ölkessel.
Eine Wärmepumpe entzieht der Umwelt, d. h. dem Erdboden, einem Gewässer oder der Umgebungsluft Wärme und stellt sie der Raumheizung oder Warmwasserbereitung zur Verfügung. Wärmepumpen sind in praktisch allen Leistungsklassen erhältlich und werden meist mit Strom betrieben. Auch gasbetriebene Wärmepumpen finden sich auf dem Markt. Wärmepumpen gelten als klimafreundlich und erhalten daher umfangreiche staatliche Förderungen.
