Emmanuel Macron “wird keinen Angriff auf Frankreich und seine Interessen” in Niger tolerieren und Paris werde “unverzüglich und unnachgiebig” reagieren, teilte der Elysée-Palast am Sonntag mit, als Tausende Menschen vor der französischen Botschaft in Niamey zur Unterstützung der putschenden Militärs demonstrierten.

“Jeder, der französische Staatsbürger, die Armee, Diplomaten oder französische Einrichtungen angreift, muss damit rechnen, dass Frankreich sofort und unnachgiebig reagiert. Der Präsident der Republik wird keinen Angriff auf Frankreich und seine Interessen dulden”, teilte der Elysée-Palast mit.

Nach Angaben des Quai d’Orsay befinden sich derzeit zwischen 500 und 600 französische Staatsangehörige in Niger.

“Frankreich unterstützt im Übrigen alle regionalen Initiativen”, die auf die “Wiederherstellung der verfassungsmäßigen Ordnung” und die Rückkehr des gewählten Präsidenten Mohamed Bazoum abzielen, fügte die französische Präsidentschaft hinzu.

Die westafrikanischen Länder treffen sich am Sonntag in Abuja zu einem “Sondergipfel”, um die Lage nach dem Militärputsch zu bewerten, wobei es wahrscheinlich zu Sanktionen kommen wird, da die Junta darin eine Drohung mit einer “unmittelbaren militärischen Intervention” sieht.

Auch das französische Außenministerium verurteilte “jegliche Gewalt gegen diplomatische Einrichtungen, für deren Sicherheit der Gaststaat verantwortlich ist”.

1500 französische Soldaten

Tausende Menschen demonstrierten vor der französischen Botschaft in Niamey, bevor sie durch Tränengasgranaten auseinandergetrieben wurden.

Einige Demonstranten wollten in das Gebäude eindringen, andere rissen das Schild mit der Aufschrift “Französische Botschaft in Niger” ab, bevor sie es auf dem Asphalt zertrampelten und durch russische und nigrische Flaggen ersetzten.

Frankreich, das mit Niger bei der Bekämpfung des Dschihadismus und der Entwicklung verbündet ist und 1500 Soldaten im Land stationiert hat, hatte am Samstag angekündigt, seine Unterstützung nach dem Militärputsch auszusetzen.

Die Demonstration hatte mit einem Marsch zur Nationalversammlung begonnen, bei dem die Menge russische und nigrische Flaggen schwenkte. Zu den Protesten hatte die Bürgerbewegung M62 aufgerufen, die bereits gegen die Operation Barkhane der französischen Armee in der Sahelzone und der Sahara protestiert hatte.

Der gestürzte Präsident Mohamed Bazoum, der 2021 gewählt werden soll, beginnt seinen fünften Tag, an dem er in seiner Privatresidenz im Präsidentenpalast von seiner Leibgarde gefangen gehalten wird, deren Chef, General Abdourahamane Tiani, der Junta des Nationalen Rates zur Rettung des Vaterlandes (CNSP) vorsitzt.
