Rund um den Globus gehen am Samstag, 25. März, für eine Stunde die Lichter aus. Die Stadt Kassel beteiligt sich seit Jahren an der „Earth Hour“, in dem von 20.30 Uhr bis 21.30 Uhr das Rathaus-Hauptgebäude in der Oberen Königsstraße verdunkelt wurde. Die symbolische „Licht aus“-Aktion setzt ein Zeichen für Klimaschutz und einen lebendigen Planeten.

Auch dieses Jahr bleibt das Rathaus unbeleuchtet – wie auch schon seit einigen Monaten. Anlass hierfür sind die Anstrengungen und Verpflichtungen zur Energieeinsparung, die im Zuge der Auswirkungen des russischen Angriffskriegs auf die Ukraine von Bund und Kommune unternommen wurden. Die Earth Hour sei nichtsdestotrotz ein wichtiges Zeichen, das die Stadt Kassel vollumfänglich unterstütze, so Umweltdezernent Christof Nolda, denn: „Die Klimakrise wird auch hierzulande zunehmend spürbarer. Dabei werden die allermeisten Emissionen durch unseren Energieverbrauch verursacht. Die Aktion ‚Earth Hour‘ erinnert daran, dass Energie einzusparen die wesentliche Voraussetzung dafür ist, eine lebenswerte Welt zu erhalten.“ Die Aktion “Earth Hour” des World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) ist die größte Klimaschutzaktion der Welt und sie setzt sich seit jeher für den Erhalt der Lebensgrundlagen ein. Ziel ist es, Menschen über Grenzen hinweg zum Schutz der Erde zusammen zu bringen. Die “Earth Hour” findet dieses Jahr bereits zum 17. Mal statt. Ihren Anfang nahm die Aktion im Jahr 2007 in Sydney. Mittlerweile wird die “Stunde der Erde” in mehr als 180 Ländern auf allen Kontinenten veranstaltet. Weltweit nehmen mehr als 7.000 Städte teil. documenta-Stadt Kassel
