[av_dropcap1]J[/av_dropcap1]eder Bundesbürger hat im Jahr 2020 im Durchschnitt rund 40 kg Plastikverpackungsabfälle verursacht. Damit liegt Deutschland EU-weit im Spitzenfeld. Denn wie die Infografik von Statista zeigt, entstehen nur noch in Irland (62 kg), Ungarn (47 kg) Portugal (40 kg) und Estland (40 kg) mehr oder genauso viele Abfälle je Einwohner. In Griechenland, Zypern und Kroatien fallen den Eurostat-Daten zufolge pro Kopf die wenigsten Plastikabfälle an.
Der Umgang mit Abfällen gehört zu den wichtigsten Umweltthemen weltweit – und der nur schwer bis gar nicht abbaubare Plastikmüll nimmt dabei eine immer zentralere Rolle ein. 10 bis 20 Jahre. Solange benötigt eine Einkaufstüte im Meer, bis sie sich komplett zersetzt hat. Noch drastischer sieht es mit der PET-Flasche aus: Sie benötigt rund 450 Jahre, bis Plastikflaschen im Wasser zersetzt sind und in Form von Mikroplastik auf den Meeresgrund sinkt.
Wird Plastikmüll nicht ordnungsgemäß entsorgt oder wiederverwertet, gelangt dieser häufig durch Flüsse und andere Gewässer in die Weltmeere. Insbesondere Flüsse in Afrika und Asien haben eine hohe Dichte an Kunststoffmüll. Aber auch über deutsche Flüsse werden Jahr für Jahr tausende Kilos Plastik in Nord- und Ostsee gespült. Jährlich verenden daher zahlreiche Meerestiere durch die Auswirkungen von Plastikabfällen in den Ozeanen. Ein hoher Anteil an schlecht entsorgtem Plastik trägt dazu bei, dass die Menge des Plastikmülls in den Weltmeeren immer weiter zunimmt.
Als Verpackungsabfälle, die in einem Mitgliedstaat anfallen, gilt laut Eurostat die Menge an Verpackungen, die im selben Jahr in diesem Mitgliedstaat in Verkehr gebracht wurde. „Verpackung“ beinhaltet gemäß der Eurostat-Definition alle Produkte aus beliebigen Materialien jeglicher Art (in diesem Fall Plastik), die für die Aufbewahrung, den Schutz, die Handhabung, die Lieferung und die Präsentation von Waren verwendet werden, vom Rohstoff bis zum verarbeiteten Produkt, vom Hersteller bis zum Benutzer oder Verbraucher. Als Verpackung gelten auch „Einwegartikel“, die für den gleichen Zweck verwendet werden.
