Einigen sozialen Netzwerken wird häufig nachgesagt, bestimmte politische Ideologien würden auf ihnen überwiegen beziehungsweise verstärkt propagiert. Vor allem auf Twitter werfen sich die politisch linken und rechten Lager dies gegenseitig vor. Aber hat die politische Einstellung einen erkennbaren Einfluss auf die bevorzugte Nutzung von sozialen Medien? Zu Beantwortung dieser Frage hat Statista rechtspolitisch, wie auch linkspolitische Personen befragt, auf welchen Netzwerken sie aktiv sind. Die Umfrageteilnehmer:innen wurden dahingehend vorher gebeten, ihre politische Orientierung auf einer 10-Punkte-Skala von Linksaußen bis Rechtsaußen selbst einzuschätzen.
Den Ergebnissen zufolge gibt es bei den meisten Plattformen keine gravierenden Unterschiede. Vor allem bei Twitter waren Linke (24 Prozent) und Rechte (25 Prozent) etwa gleichauf. Auch Facebook wurden von beiden Lagern ähnlich häufig genutzt. Instagram nutzen rund 64 Prozent der befragten Linken im Gegensatz zu etwa 56 Prozent der rechts Eingestellten. Bei TikTok hat der Unterschied ebenfalls etwa acht Prozentpunkte betragen – allerdings diesmal zugunsten der Rechten (44 Prozent). Telegram ist das wohl kontroverseste unter den hier aufgezählten Netzwerken. Der verschlüsselte Messenger war zuletzt häufiger Gegenstand negativer Berichterstattung wegen der Vielzahl illegaler Aktivitäten, die über die Plattform betrieben werden. Oft ist beispielsweise die Rede von rechtsextremen Kanälen. Auch die Statista Consumer Insights zeigen, dass Telegram unter Rechten mit 23 Prozent beliebter ist als unter den Linken (16 Prozent).
Die Ergebnisse dieser Befragung legen also nahe, dass die politische Haltung bei der Social-Media-Nutzung nur geringen Einfluss hat. Es gibt zwar Unterschiede, diese sind allerdings nur wenige Prozentpunkte groß und sollten damit nicht zu stark interpretiert werden. Auch durch die Selbsteinschätzung der politischen Orientierung sind die Umfragewerte mit gewisser Vorsicht zu genießen.
