Um 19:10 Uhr erreichte die Leitstelle der Feuerwehr Kassel über den Notruf 112 die Meldung über einen Brand in einem Obergeschoss eines Mehrfamilienhauses in der Goethestrasse. Daraufhin wurden der Löschzug der Berufsfeuerwehr der Feuerwache 1, die Freiwillige Feuerwehr Kassel- Harleshausen, zwei Rettungswagen und ein Notarzteinsatzfahrzeug alarmiert. Bei Ankunft an der Einsatzstelle waren die Personen aus der Brandwohnung schon aus dem Gebäude geflüchtet und die weiteren Bewohner wurden durch die Feuerwehr aus dem Gebäude begleitet.

Parallel dazu wurde durch einen Trupp unter Atemschutz ein Strahlrohr vorgenommen und die Brandbekämpfung eingeleitet. Der Brand in einem Zimmer im Obergeschoss konnte schnell unter Kontrolle gebracht werden und zwei Katzen gerettet werden. Auf Grund der Rauchausbreitung im Gebäude wurden mehrere maschinelle Belüftungsgeräte sowei Atemschutztrupps zur Entrauchung eingesetzt. Durch das schnelle Eingreifen der Feuerwehr konnte eine weitere Ausbreitung des Brandes auf die anliegenden Wohnungen verhindert werden. Die Goethestrasse war während des Einsatzes im Bereich der Einsatzstelle voll gesperrt. Die Brandwohnung ist bis auf weiteres nicht bewohnbar. Der Einsatz der Feuerwehr konnte nach gut zwei Stunden beendet werden.
