Die neue Berliner Verkehrssenatorin, Manja Schreiber (CDU), hat die Radwegeplanung gestoppt. Für die Pendler:innen der Bundeshauptstadt ist das eine schlechte Nachricht. Den Statista Consumer Insights zufolge nutzt etwa ein Drittel von ihnen das Fahrrad für den täglichen Weg zur Arbeit, Schule oder Universität. Damit hat die Metropole den höchsten Fahrrad-Pendler:innen Anteil Deutschlands, wie der Blick auf die Grafik zeigt.

Indes will Berlins regierender Bürgermeister Kai Wegner den Radwege-Baustopp ganz anders verstanden wissen. “Das ist kein Stopp, sondern eine Prüfung und Priorisierung. Und das ganze Thema wird zu Unrecht aufgebauscht”, so der CDU-Politiker gegenüber dem Spiegel. Und weiter: “Im Koalitionsvertrag steht, dass wir deutlich mehr Radwege bauen wollen als die letzte Landesregierung. Was ich nicht will, sind Radwege, mit denen man Autos mutwillig ausbremst.”

Wie viel Schutz der Berliner Autoverkehr braucht sei dahin gestellt. Auf 1.000 Berliner:innen kommen laut Statistischem Bundesamt 337 Autos. Damit ist die PKW-Dichte in der Bundeshauptstadt von allen Bundeländern am niedrigsten. Auch in den Stadtstaaten Hamburg und Bremen gibt es deutlich mehr Fahrzeuge, wie eine weitere Statista-Grafik zeigt.
