Russland hat vor einem Jahr seine Erdgasexporte nach Deutschland über die Nord Stream 1 Pipeline systematisch gedrosselt und Ende August 2022 vollständig eingestellt. Wie die Statista-Animation mit Daten der Bundesnetzagentur veranschaulicht, setzt Deutschland seitdem auch auf im Importe von Flüssiggas (LNG = Liquified natural gas). Mengenmäßig stellen die Importe aus Norwegen, den Niederlanden und Belgien jedoch den größten Anteil dar. Norwegen ist derzeit die wichtigste Erdgasbezugsquelle für Deutschland.

Der überwiegende Teil der LNG-Importe kommt hingegen aus den USA.

Neben Erdöl dient Erdgas in Deutschland als zentraler Brennstoff für die Primärenergieerzeugung. Da der Bedarf nach dem Rohstoff nicht durch die nationale Erdgasförderung gedeckt werden kann, ist Deutschland. in einem hohen Ausmaß auf Einfuhren aus dem Ausland angewiesen.

Die in den Daten der Bundesnetzagentur erfassten Importmengen beinhalten auch mögliche Ringflüsse. So werden grenzüberschreitende Gasflüsse bezeichnet, die Deutschland an einem Grenzübergangspunkt verlassen und an anderer Stelle wieder nach Deutschland zurückgeleitet werden. Die Darstellung der russischen Importe in der Grafik bezieht sich ausschließlich auf die Gasflüsse über die Nord Stream 1, da nur in diesem Falle ein unmittelbarer Bezug nach Russland hergestellt werden kann. Bei anderen Transportrouten aus dem Osten liegt häufig ebenfalls ein wesentlicher Bezug aus Russland nahe, es können jedoch auch Gasmengen aus dem übrigen Europäischen Fernleitungsnetz hinzukommen.
