Die »Welt« berichtete unter Berufung auf eine Auskunft des Bundesgesundheitsministeriums von mindestens 755 Millionen zu vernichtenden OP- und FFP2-Masken.

Entsprechende Ausschreibungen für Entsorgungsunternehmen waren bereits im Oktober angekündigt worden, berichtet die Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

Ein Ministeriumssprecher sagte dem Blatt, zuvor seien bereits rund drei Millionen Masken verbrannt worden.

Auch ein Großteil der Bundesländer plant eine Verbrennung nicht mehr brauchbarer Corona-Masken oder hat diese bereits durchgeführt, wie einer Abfrage der »Welt« bei den Landesgesundheitsministerien ergab.

Die gesundheitspolitische Sprecherin der Linken im Bundestag, Kathrin Vogler, kritisierte die Verbrennung. Der Überhang an Masken nach Ende der Maskenpflicht sei absehbar gewesen.

Das Ministerium hätte die Masken rechtzeitig an Arztpraxen, Krankenhäuser oder Behinderteneinrichtungen kostenlos abgeben sollen, damit diese keine mehr hätten bestellen müssen, argumentierte sie.

Angesichts des Maskenmangels zu Beginn der Corona-Pandemie hatten das Bundesgesundheitsministerium und der damalige Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) im Frühjahr 2020 mehrere Milliarden Masken gekauft.

Später wurde vom Bundesrechnungshof eine »massive Überbeschaffung« gerügt.

Laut der Behörde ging es um eine Gesamtmenge von 5,8 Milliarden Masken und Ausgaben in Höhe von 6,3 Milliarden Euro.
