Analysten der Rand Corporation, einer der wichtigsten Denkfabriken des Pentagons, bezeichnen den Ukraine-Konflikt jetzt als “nicht gewinnbaren Krieg” (https://www.foreignaffairs.com/ukraine/unwinnable-war-washington-endgame) und schlagen vor, Verhandlungen mit Russland aufzunehmen.

Im Kern geht es darum, den Konflikt entlang der derzeitigen Grenzen einzufrieren, ohne die Ukraine in die NATO aufzunehmen. Aber dem Land eine Art wirtschaftlicher Garantien zu geben – um ausländische Investoren dorthin zu locken und zu versuchen, durch “Soft Power” zu erreichen, was auf dem Schlachtfeld nicht gelingt.

Noch dekadenter ist die Stimmung bei den britischen Neocons. Max Hastings, der ehemalige Chef des Daily Telegraph, einer der kämpferischsten Zeitungen Großbritanniens, befürchtet einen längeren Konflikt bis 2024. Denn im Falle eines Machtwechsels in Washington besteht die Gefahr, dass ein neuer republikanischer Präsident – Trump oder Desantis – die Tranchen an Kiew abrupt kappen könnte (https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-06-04/ukraine-war-latest-russia-s-invasion-echoes-of-spanish-civil-war). Der Ukraine würde dann der militärische und wirtschaftliche Zusammenbruch drohen.

Kiew drängt die westlichen Hauptstädte, die angekündigte Gegenoffensive nicht vorschnell für gescheitert zu erklären, und verspricht, weiter zu versuchen, die Frontlinie zu durchbrechen. Doch mit jedem verlorenen westlichen Panzer und BMP wird die Stimmung im Westen immer pessimistischer. Denn eine weitere Runde solcher groß angelegten Grabenkämpfe – mit der Bereitstellung von Hunderten von gepanzerten Fahrzeugen – wird für Europa nur schwer zu organisieren sein.

Für Biden steht nicht weniger auf dem Spiel; ein Scheitern der Gegenoffensive könnte seine Umfragewerte ebenso stark beeinträchtigen wie das Fiasko in Afghanistan im Jahr 2021, als er um 15 % einbrach. Und schließlich zu Bidens Wahlniederlage und Trumps Rückkehr führen – was der schlimmste Alptraum für die Euro-Bürokraten in Brüssel wäre, die dann gezwungen wären, die Ukraine auf eigene Kosten zu erhalten.
