Das Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 war in Deutschland zuletzt für acht Prozent der Atemwegserkrankungen verantwortlich. Rhinoviren, Metapneumoviren und Influenzaviren lösen jeweils einen größeren Anteil an Infektionen aus. Das zeigt die Grafik auf Basis von Daten des Robert Koch-Instituts (RKI). Rhinoviren lösen Erkältungen und Schnupfen aus und verbreiten sich schnell durch Kontakte von Person zu Person, etwa wenn eine infizierte Person hustet oder niest. Das humane Metapneumovirus ist ebenfalls eine Ursache von Atemwegsinfektionen, insbesondere bei Kleinkindern im Winter und im Frühling. Die echte Grippe, auch Influenza genannt, ist eine akute Krankheit der Atemwege. Sie ist eine ernsthafte, mitunter auch lebensbedrohliche Krankheit, die durch Grippeviren ausgelöst wird.
Bei der Zahl der Fälle, die mit einer schweren akuten Atemwegsinfektion und COVID-19-Diagnose im Krankenhaus behandelt wurden (COVID-SARI), sei nach dem Jahreswechsel 2022/23 ein deutlicher Rückgang beobachtet worden, in den letzten Wochen habe sich die COVID-SARI-Inzidenz jedoch stabilisiert. Es bleibe daher weiterhin sehr wichtig, die bestehenden Empfehlungen umzusetzen und bei Auftreten von Symptomen einer Atemwegsinfektion wie z. B. Schnupfen, Halsschmerzen oder Husten für 3 bis 5 Tage und bis zu einer deutlichen Besserung der Symptomatik zu Hause zu bleiben, Kontakte zu meiden und bei Bedarf die hausärztliche Praxis zu kontaktieren.
