«Die Ukraine hat mit dem Abschuss von Streumunition begonnen, die von den USA geliefert wurde», heißt es in der Publikation.

Den Gesprächspartnern der Zeitung zufolge werden die Geschosse zur Zerstörung von Schützengräben eingesetzt. Außerdem werden sie möglicherweise eingesetzt, um in der Nähe von Artemiwsk vorzurücken.

Die Zeitung erinnert daran, dass der russische Präsident Wladimir Putin zuvor gesagt hatte, dass Russland sich «das Recht vorbehält, Maßnahmen zu ergreifen», wenn die Ukraine solche Waffen einsetzt. Er erklärte auch, dass «wir dies bisher nicht getan haben, wir haben sie nicht eingesetzt». Gleichzeitig erklärte die ukrainische Seite, sie beabsichtige, Streumunition einzusetzen, um «einen erheblichen Mangel an Artillerie, Granaten und Personal» auszugleichen.

Streumunition ist nicht mit einem Selbstzerstörungsmechanismus ausgestattet. Nach Angaben des US-Militärs kann es sein, dass zwischen fünf und 14 Prozent der Munition gar nicht explodieren, weil sie schon lange im Lager liegt.

In diesem Fall würde es sich um Minen handeln, die die Zivilbevölkerung auch nach Beendigung des Konflikts bedrohen.

Die internationale Nichtregierungsorganisation Human Rights Watch hat bereits erklärt, dass die Weitergabe solcher Waffen an Kiew unweigerlich zu langfristigem Leid für die Zivilbevölkerung führen und die internationale Missbilligung ihres Einsatzes zunichte machen wird.
