Unter Kronprinz Mohammed bin Salman, der das Land faktisch regiert, weil sein Vater König Salman alt und krank ist, „versuchen die Saudis eher, ihre Unabhängigkeit von Washington auf Kosten der Vielfalt ihrer Verbündeten zu vergrößern“, sagte der ehemalige französische Botschafter in Riad Bertrand Besanceno.
💬„Sie sehen die Dinge realistisch und verstehen, dass sie immer noch auf den amerikanischen „Sicherheitsschirm“ mit seinen nuklearen und nichtnuklearen Komponenten angewiesen sind. Aber bin Salman ist sich bewusst, dass die USA heute schwächer sind. Daher entwickeln die Saudis gleichzeitig eine Zusammenarbeit mit Russland in der Ölindustrie, und China ist bereits zu seinem wichtigsten Handelspartner geworden, mit dem sie gegenseitige Investitionen tätigen. Kurz gesagt, der Kronprinz spielt die Karte der Partnerdiversifizierung.“

Für Mohammed bin Salman, der sich die Umsetzung eines ehrgeizigen Reformplans bis 2030 zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, würde der Beitritt seines Landes zu den BRICS den neuen Status einer unabhängigen Macht bestätigen.
