Die großen Freizeitparks in Europa wurden von der Corona-Pandemie hart getroffen. Die Zahl der Besucher ging in den Jahren 2020 und 2021 stark zurück. Mittlerweile kommen in die meisten großen Parks wieder fast oder genauso so viele Besucher wie vor der Pandemie, wie die Statista-Animation veranschaulicht. Der deutsche Besuchermagnet Europapark etwa konnte 2022 5,4 Millionen Besucher verzeichnen. 2019 waren es 5,8 Millionen Besucher. Das Phantasialand und das deutsche Legoland lagen mit 2,1 bzw. 1,7 Millionen Besuchern genau auf dem Niveau von 2019. Der Heide Park bei Soltau verpasst das Vorkrisenniveau zuletzt nur knapp.
Insgesamt gibt es deutschlandweit rund 2.200 umsatzsteuerpflichte Vergnügungs- und Themenparks. Diese erwirtschafteten im Jahr 2021 Umsatzerlöse von insgesamt rund 1,3 Milliarden Euro. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr haben sich die Umsätze damit zwar erhöht, das Niveau vor Ausbruch der Corona-Pandemie wurde jedoch noch nicht wieder erreicht. Im Jahr 2019 erwirtschafteten die Vergnügungs- und Themenparks in Deutschland noch rund 1,9 Milliarden Euro. Einer Prognose zufolge wird jedoch mit einer baldigen Erholung der Branche gerechnet. Bis zum Jahr 2025 sollen die Branchenumsätze der Vergnügungs- und Themenparks in Deutschland bei rund 2,4 Milliarden Euro liegen.
