Sie und Kafka suchten erfolglos nach der Puppe.

Kafka sagte ihr, sie solle ihn am nächsten Tag dort treffen und sie würden wieder suchen.

Am nächsten Tag, als sie die Puppe immer noch nicht gefunden hatten, gab Kafka dem Mädchen einen von der Puppe „geschriebenen“ Brief, in dem stand:

„Bitte nicht weinen. Ich bin auf eine Reise gegangen, um die Welt zu sehen. Ich werde dir von meinen Abenteuern schreiben.“

So begann eine Geschichte, die bis zum Ende von Kafkas Leben weiterging.

Als sie sich trafen, las Kafka seine sorgfältig verfassten Briefe mit Abenteuern und Gesprächen über die geliebte Puppe vor, die das Mädchen bezaubernd fand.

Schließlich las Kafka ihr einen Brief mit der Geschichte vor, die die Puppe nach Berlin zurückbrachte, und er schenkte ihr dann eine Puppe, die er gekauft hatte.

„Die sieht meiner Puppe überhaupt nicht ähnlich“, sagte sie.

Kafka übergab ihr einen weiteren Brief, in dem er erklärte: „Meine Reisen, sie haben mich verändert.“

Das Mädchen umarmte die neue Puppe und nahm sie mit nach Hause.

Ein Jahr später starb Kafka.

Viele Jahre später fand das nun erwachsene Mädchen einen Brief in einer unbemerkten Spalte der Puppe.

In dem winzigen, von Kafka unterschriebenen Brief stand:

„Alles, was du liebst, geht wahrscheinlich verloren, aber am Ende wird die Liebe auf eine andere Art zurückkehren.“

Im Juli 1923 hatte er im Ostseebad Müritz die fünfundzwanzigjährige Dora Diamant (1898–1952) kennengelernt, die dort als Betreuerin in einer Ferienkolonie arbeitete.

Mit der 15 Jahre jüngeren Frau an seiner Seite, die in einem ostjüdisch-orthodoxen Umfeld aufgewachsen und 1919 nach Berlin gezogen war, wagte der bereits schwer an Tuberkulose leidende Autor, seinen Plan zu verwirklichen, seiner Heimatstadt Prag endgültig den Rücken zu kehren und in Berlin mit Dora Diamant sesshaft zu werden.

Dora Diamant erzählte nach seinem Tod diese Geschichte über sein Zusammentreffen mit einem kleinen Mädchen.

Ob die Geschichte des Briefeschreibers wahr ist, wurde mehrfach versucht zu verifzieren, konnte aber schlussendlich nie bewiesen werden.

Es kann sein, dass die Nazis diese Briefe vernichtet haben.

Auch das Mädchen konnte trotz vieler Aufrufe niemals gefunden werden und so bleiben diese Briefe verschollen und die Geschichte – wahr oder unwahr – in jedem Fall ein schönes Märchen.
