Die Deutschen geben Schätzungen der Statista Market Insights zufolge 240 Euro pro Kopf und Jahr für Kaffee aus. Das sind 50 Euro mehr als Italiener und 60 Euro mehr als die Franzosen in das beliebte Heißgetränk investieren. An der Spitze des Ländervergleichs liegt mit großem Abstand Dänemark mit 1.170 Euro. Wie kommen die teils beträchtlichen Unterschiede zustande? Hierbei spielen zum einen die unterschiedlichen Preise für Nahrungs- und Genussmittel eine Rolle, wie die diese Statista-Grafik veranschaulicht. Zum anderen fällt der Kaffeekonsum in den gezeigten Ländern unterschiedlich hoch aus (siehe dazu diese Statista-Grafik). So wird in vielen skandinavischen Ländern deutlich mehr Kaffee getrunken als im Süden oder Osten Europas.

Das im Statista Market Insight analysierte Marktsegment Kaffee beinhaltet sowohl Röstkaffee als auch löslichen oder Instant-Kaffee. Nicht enthalten sind trinkfertige Kaffeegetränke, welche im Segment Trinkfertige (RTD) Kaffeegetränke in den Alkoholfreien Getränken aufgeführt werden. Röstkaffee beinhaltet gemahlenen Röstkaffee, ganze Kaffeebohnen sowie Pads und Pods (Single-Serve Kaffee). Instant-Kaffee beinhaltet löslichen Kaffee, für den außer heißem Wasser keine weiteren Geräte zur Zubereitung notwendig sind.

Rund drei Viertel der Umsätze werden dabei vom Außer-Haus-Markt generiert, also über die Gastronomie (z.B. Coffee Shops, Cafés und Restaurants, aber auch Bäckereien und Tankstellen). Ein Viertel der Umsätze werden im so genannten Zu-Hause-Markt erzielt. Im Einzelhandel stellt hier Nestlé mit seinen Marken Nespresso und Nescafé den nach Umsatz bedeutendsten Player dar. Weitere Top-Player sind Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), Keurig Dr Pepper, Tchibo, J.M. Smucker und Lavazza. Außer Haus sind Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Panera Bread, Costa Coffee und Dunkin‘ Donuts als bedeutendste Unternehmensgruppen zu nennen.
