April 2023 – Wichtig und doch oft unterschätzt: Auch die beste Katzentoilette kann am falschen Ort Probleme verursachen und zu Unsauberkeit führen. Denn Katzen sind sensible Tiere, die bereits Kleinigkeiten irritieren können. Jana Hoger, Fachreferentin für tierische Mitbewohner bei PETA, hat daher einige hilfreiche Tipps für Menschen mit Katzen zusammengestellt.

„Wenn Katzen aus scheinbar unerklärlichen Gründen in die Wohnung urinieren, könnte der Grund die Katzentoilette sein“, so Jana Hoger. „Natürlich müssen im Vorfeld alle körperlichen Ursachen ausgeschlossen werden. Dazu empfiehlt sich eine gründliche Untersuchung in der tierärztlichen Praxis des Vertrauens inklusive eines Blutchecks.“

• Der richtige Ort:Wichtig ist ein ruhiger Platz, an dem die Katzen dennoch freie Sicht haben – sie sollten sich sicher fühlen und ihr Geschäft ungestört verrichten können. Außerdem benötigen Katzen unbedingt genügend Bewegungsfreiheit, um ihre Ausscheidungen verscharren zu können.
• Raumtrennung:Essplatz und Katzentoilette sollten so weit wie möglich voneinander entfernt platziert werden – am besten in getrennten Räumen.
• Die richtige Katzentoilette: Einige Katzen gehen nicht gerne in Verstecke oder Höhlen, um ihre Notdurft zu verrichten, und bevorzugen offene, große Katzentoiletten. Geschlossene Katzenklos mit Deckel und Klappe sind deshalb nicht für alle Tiere attraktiv. Menschen mit Katzen sollten testen, welche Art der Toilette ihre Katze bevorzugt.
• Sauberkeit:Das Katzenklo sollte so sauber wie möglich sein, denn verständlicherweise geht keine Katze gerne auf eine schmutzige Toilette. Die tägliche Reinigung ist Pflicht. Einige Katzen benutzen ihre Toilette sogar nur, wenn das letzte Geschäft entsorgt worden ist.
• Katzenstreu:Die optimale Katzenstreu sollte nicht nur staubarm, geruchsbindend und unparfümiert sein, sondern sich auch nicht zu kantig anfühlen. Da Katzen Gewohnheiten lieben, sollte ein häufiger Wechsel von Katzenstreu vermieden werden.
• Toilettenanzahl: Als Faustregel gilt, dass jeweils ein Katzenklo mehr als im Haushalt lebende Katzen vorhanden sein sollte, da Katzen ihre Ausscheidungen auch in der Natur nicht immer an derselben Stelle absetzen. Daher macht es Sinn, auch einzeln gehaltenen Katzen eine zweite Toilette anzubieten.
