Ursprünglich als rein energetische Sanierung geplant, wurden im Zuge festgestellter Mängel weitere grundlegende Sanierungsarbeiten vorgenommen. Nach rund drei Jahren ist die Halle aus dem Jahr 1965 nun energetisch und in Sachen Brandschutz auf Stand gebracht und verfügt über modernisierte Dusch- und Umkleideräume. Die Gebäudehülle erscheint bereits seit 2021 in neuem Gewand.

„Ich freue mich, dass die Königstor-Halle nun selbst wieder fit ist für die nächsten Jahrzehnte Schul- und Vereinssport“, so Stadtbaurat Christof Nolda. „Nach über sechzig Jahren intensiver Nutzung war diese gründliche Sanierung auch in Punkto Sicherheit notwendig. Für Stadt und Klima ist zudem wichtig, dass wir den Energieverbrauch wie auch die Kosten dauerhaft senken.“

Die ursprüngliche Maßnahme der energetischen Sanierung wurde durch das Planungsbüro Reichel Architekten PartGmbB betreut und umgesetzt. Der Entwurf übernahm die Gliederung des ursprünglichen Gebäudes mit einem Sockel, einem horizontalen Mittelteil und dem verglasten oberen Kubus. Der Mittelteil erhielt eine Bekleidung aus Keramikstäben, die in ihrem Farbspiel einen Bezug zur benachbarten Königstorschule herstellen. Die energetische Sanierung überlagerte sich zu großen Teilen mit den pandemiebedingten Schließungen aller Sporthallen und fand ihren Abschluss im Frühjahr 2021. Sie wurde durch Bundesmittel aus dem Kommunalen Investitionsprogramm gefördert.

Dieses ergänzte die energetische Sanierung um eine Modernisierung der in die Jahre gekommenen Dusch- und Umkleideräume.

Die für die Techniksanierung notwendige Öffnung der Bauteile führte an vielen Stellen, wie schon die Fassadensanierung, zu Befunden, die letztlich zum dritten Maßnahmenpaket „Brandschutz“ führten. Der gesamte Brandschutz wurde mit städtischen Haushaltsmitteln an die heutigen Anforderungen angepasst.

Während das äußere Erscheinungsbild durch die neue Hülle deutlich erkennbare Veränderungen erfuhr, stellt sich das Innere der Sporthalle auf den ersten Blick relativ unverändert dar. Die deutlichen Eingriffe erfolgten im Wesentlichen hinter den sichtbaren Oberflächen: Installationssystem und Leitungsführungen wurden vollständig erneuert und Bauteile grundsätzlich überarbeitet.

„Wir freuen uns, dass wir mit der Wiedereröffnung der Königstorhalle die angespannte Situation im Bereich der Hallenbelegung etwas entzerren können. Die Schließung während der dreijährigen Bauzeit stellte die Vereine, Schulen und das Sportamt vor besondere Herausforderungen. Gemeinsam konnten jedoch alternative Lösung für Schulsport, Trainings- und Spielbetrieb gefunden werden,“ so Sportdezernent Dirk Stochla. „Mein Dank gilt allen Beteiligten für die gegenseitige Unterstützung sowie die Kreativität und Bereitschaft bei der Suche nach Alternativen.“

Aktuell besteht noch eine Beschränkung für die Nutzung als Veranstaltungsstätte. Hier sind weitere bauliche Investitionen, wie Sanierung der separaten Lüftungszentrale der Zuschauertribüne, Installation einer Sprachalarmierung und diverse bauliche Ertüchtigungen im Bereich der Türen notwendig. Die Gesamtmaßnahme wurde jedoch so konzipiert, dass hierfür keine erneute Schließung der Sporthalle notwendig sein wird. Die Arbeiten werden insgesamt im laufenden Betrieb umgesetzt werden können.

Die Baukosten betrugen insgesamt rund 5,6 Mio. Euro. Die energetische Sanierung schlug mit 2,8 Mio. Euro zu Buche, die Maßnahmenpakete Sanierung Technik und Umkleiden, sowie Brandschutz mit weiteren 2,8 Mio. Euro. Der Bund beteiligte sich über das Kommunale Investitionsprogramm KIP I mit Fördermittel in Höhe von rund 2,3 Mio. Euro an der energetischen Sanierung. Die restlichen ca. 3,3 Mio. Euro der Gesamtmaßnahme wurden komplett über kommunale Haushaltsmittel der Stadt Kassel finanziert
