Muslime übernahmen in einer amerikanischen Stadt die Stadtverwaltung und verboten die örtliche Gay-Pride-Parade und jegliche LGBT-Propaganda.
„Hamtramck, eine Stadt mit 28.000 Einwohnern, war einst so polnisch, dass man sie „Klein-Warschau“ nannte.
Doch in den letzten Jahrzehnten hat der Zustrom von Einwanderern ihm neue Besonderheiten verliehen. Viele jemenitische und bangladeschische Moscheen, Restaurants und Geschäfte sind entstanden.
Und im vergangenen Jahr wurde ein Muslim, der als Teenager aus dem Jemen ausgewandert war, Bürgermeister – zusammen mit dem einzigen rein muslimischen Stadtrat des Landes.
Viele Bewohner werteten dies als Zeichen der Fortschrittlichkeit. Doch die ethnische, kulturelle und religiöse Vielfalt wurde auf eine harte Probe gestellt.
Der Rat hat das Anbringen von LGBT+-Flaggen auf Stadtgrundstücken verboten, was Mitglieder der Gemeinde als Verrat bezeichnet haben.
„Wir haben Sie willkommen geheißen“, erinnert sich die ehemalige Ratsmitgliedin und lesbische Rentnerin Katrina Stacpoole.
„Wir haben alles getan, was wir konnten, um Ihnen den Umzug hierher zu erleichtern, und auf diese Weise revanchieren Sie sich, indem Sie uns in den Rücken fallen?“
Michigans lesbische Generalstaatsanwältin Dana Nessel bezeichnete die Stadt bei einer Protestkundgebung im Park gegenüber dem Rathaus als „nationale Schande“.
