Am 2. September 2008 veröffentlichte Google die erste Version des Chrome-Browsers für Windows XP — vier Jahre später war dieser bereits der meistgenutzte Webbrowser weltweit. Heute thront Chrome mit einem Marktanteil von rund 63,6 Prozent mit großem Abstand über allen anderen Browsern. Neben der Suchmaschine und dem Video-Portal YouTube zählt Chrome wohl zu den größten Erfolgsgeschichten des US-Unternehmens.
Zuvor surften der Großteil der Internetnutzer:innen mit dem Internet Explorer durchs Netz. Das ist mittlerweile aber eine ganze Weile her. Laut StatCounter waren die Glanzzeiten des Internet Explorers mit dem Aufstig von Chrome Geschichte. Schon 2015 reagierte Microsoft und brachte mit Edge einen neuen Webbrowser auf den Markt. An die Erfolge des Internet Explorer konnte dieser allerdings in keiner Weise anknüpfen, wie der Blick auf die Statista-Grafik zeigt.
Anfang März 2021 wurde Edge (legacy) eingestellt und durch eine neue auf Chromium basierende Variante ersetzt. Der neue Microsoft Browser steht auf dem Gerüst von Google Chrome und liefert ähnliche Leistungsdaten und Features. Die neue Edge-Version erfreut sich indes immer größerer Beliebtheit – mit einem weltweiten Marktanteil von rund acht Prozent verdrängt er 2021 Mozilla Firefox vom dritten Platz des Browser-Rankings und steht auch weiterhin hinter Google Chrome und Apples Safari.
