Vergangenes Jahr wurde in Deutschland laut Statistischem Bundesamt etwa alle 20 Minuten ein Kind im Straßenverkehr verletzt oder getötet. In absoluten Zahl ausgedrückt waren es verunglückte 25.806 Personen unter 15 Jahren – deutlich mehr als im pandemie-geprägten Vorjahr. Der Vergleich mit dem präpandemischen Niveau zeigt jedoch einen leichten Rückgang von acht Prozent.
Die Statista-Grafik lässt vermuten, dass die Straßen für Kinder innerhalb der letzten 30 Jahre sicherer geworden sind. Im Jahr 1991 wurden noch mehr als 51.000 verunfallte Kinder registriert, in den Folgejahren ist die Anzahl mit Ausnahme einiger zwischenzeitlicher Anstiege kontinuierlich gesunken
Nichtsdestotrotz ereignen sich auf dem Schulweg weiterhin die meisten Unfälle die Kinder involvieren – besonders häufig im Zeitraum von sieben bis acht Uhr und 15 bis 16 Uhr. Jüngere Kinder verunglücken dabei am ehesten mit dem Auto der Eltern, da sie meistens weniger oft allein unterwegs sind. Unter den sechs- bis 14-Jährigen sind die meisten Unfallopfer auf dem Fahrrad unterwegs (28 Prozent). In vielen dieser Fälle war das Tragen eines Helms lebensrettend.
Am 19. August werden in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Niedersachsen und Bremen die Schulstarter:innen des Jahres 2023 eingeschult. Die anderen Bundesländer folgen dann in den kommenden Wochen nach. Das bedeutet, dass sich auf den deutschen Straßen auch wieder vermehrt junge und dementsprechend unsichere Verkehrsteilnehmer:innen bewegen – ob zu Fuß, mit dem Fahrrad oder öffentlichen Nahverkehr.
