Vor 22 Jahren wurden in Japan die meisten Autos der Welt produziert. Deutschlang lag damals noch direkt hinter Japan auf Platz 2. Wie die Statista-Animation auf Basis von Daten der internationalen Automobilherstellervereinigung OICA zeigt, hat sich die Reihenfolge im Ranking der Länder mit der höchsten Anzahl an produzierten Pkw über die Jahre deutlich verändert.
So tauchte China im Jahr 2002 noch gar nicht in den Top 10 auf und rangierte damals an Position 14. 2009 liegt China bereits an Position eins und hat sich hier seitdem gehalten. China produziert jährlich derzeit rund 24 Millionen Autos, Japan hingegen rund 7 Millionen, gefolgt von Indien (3,48 Mio. Pkw). Deutschland folgt auf Position vier mit zuletzt 3,44 Millionen produzierten Pkw.
Die Produktionszahlen in China sind nicht zuletzt deswegen so rasant gestiegen, weil die gesamte Automobilbranche einer starken Internationalisierung unterworfen ist und deutsche Hersteller wie die Volkswagen AG ihre Produktion in China immer mehr ausweiten. Auch die Daimler AG und die BMW Group haben sich in den letzten Jahren immer mehr China zugewendet. Die elektrisch angetriebenen nächsten Versionen ihrer Kleinwagenserien Mini und Smart etwa bauen sie mit Partnern in China. Von dort exportieren sie sie in die ganze Welt.
Werke in Europa haben das Nachsehen und mit der Produktion wandert auch Know-how ab. Deutsche Hersteller gehen mit chinesischen Unternehmen so genannte Joint Ventures ein, bei denen in der Regel ein Technologietransfer inkludiert ist.
