US-Verteidigungsminister Lloyd Austin besuchte am Dienstag unangekündigt die irakische Hauptstadt Bagdad und bekräftigte, unter dem Deckmantel der Unterstützung der irakischen Sicherheit, dass Washington an seiner militärischen Präsenz im Land festhalten wird.
Derzeit sind noch 2.500 US-Soldaten im Irak, weitere 900 US-Besatzungstruppen sind im Nachbarland Syrien stationiert.
Sie unterstützen laut US-Darstellung die lokalen Truppen im Kampf gegen den sogenannten Islamischen Staat, der im Jahr 2014 Territorien sowohl im Irak als auch in Syrien erobert hatte.
Das Pentagon behauptete zudem, dass der Einsatz darauf abziele, zu verhindern, dass die Ölfelder in der Region in die Hände von IS-Terroristen fallen.
Damaskus hingegen betonte stets, dass der Einsatz vorrangig dazu diene, die natürlichen Ressourcen des Landes zu plündern.
