Dort sind gerade um die 50 Kinder und einige Erwachsene mit Schaufeln und Schubkarren im Einsatz. Und er ergänzt, dass ein Garten, aus dem man zudem noch Nahrhaftes ziehen könne, einen enormen Erholungs- und Freizeitwert biete.

Diesseits des Bauzauns nimmt er jetzt tatsächlich Gestalt an, der aus öffentlichen Miitteln geförderte Urbane Waldgarten südlich des Wahlebachs. Er entsteht auf einer etwa 5000 Quadratmeter großen, langgezogenen Fläche zwischen dem früheren AEG-Werk und den Parzellen des Kleingärtnervereins Forstgelände. Für die sogenannte Strauch-Ebene setzten am Freitag, 17 März, Kinder aus Schulen und Kitas sowie Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder eine ganze Reihe junger Pflanzen – insbesondere verschiedene Beerensorten.

Wer will, kann am Samstag, 18. März, zwischen 10 bis 17 Uhr weitermachen oder sich einfach nur umsehen. Zur öffentlichen Aktion ist jede und jeder eingeladen. Vor Ort vertreten sind zudem das Planungsbüro und die Baufirma sowie das Projektteam des städtischen Umwelt- und Gartenamts.

Viel ist in den vergangenen Monaten schon geschehen auf dem Areal. Der Boden ist vorbereitet, kleine Wege angelegt und die ersten 225 Bäume in die Erde gebracht, darunter Kirschen, Apfelbäume, Esskastanie und Baumhasel. Im Mai kommt dann noch die „Krautebene“ unter anderem mit Waldmeister und Minzen hinzu. Auch diese wird dann, wie die anderen Ebenen auch, viel Essbares liefern.

Waldgärten bestehen aus vielen essbaren, mehrjährigen Pflanzen, die in mehreren Schichten übereinander wachsen. Ganz ähnlich wie die Pflanzen im Wald. So werden in der untersten Schicht Gemüse und Kräuter angepflanzt und darüber verschiedene Nuss‐ und Beerensträucher gesetzt. Über den Sträuchern wachsen zum Beispiel Obst‐ und Nussbäume. Zwischen den Schichten können Kletterpflanzen ranken. Die Pflanzen sollen über viele Jahre an Ort und Stelle wachsen und geerntet werden.Die Gestaltung der Waldgärten, die vorwiegend aus essbaren Pflanzen bestehen, ähnelt dem schichtweisen Aufbau eines Laubwaldes. Sie sollen vielfältige positive ökologische, klimatische und soziale Aspekte fördern.  In Kassel ist neben dem Projekt in Waldau in Helleböhn ein weiterer Urbaner Waldgarten vorgesehen.
