2022 verzeichneten die Verkehrsbetriebe des Öffentlichen Personennahverkehrs etwa 10,2 Milliarden Fahrgäste , 29 Prozent mehr als im durch Corona geprägten Vorjahr. Als Treiber für den Fahrgastzuwachs im Jahresvergleich macht das Statistische Bundesamt die Einführung des 9-Euro-Tickets im Juni 2022, die Lockerung beziehungsweise Aufhebung der Corona-Regularien und die Zuwanderung durch Geflüchtete aus der Ukraine veranwortlich. Wie unsere Grafik zeigt, dürften die Werte für die einzelnen Verkehrsmittel im nächsten Jahr wieder präpandemisches Niveau erreichen.
So fanden im vergangenen Jahr nach vorläufigen Angaben rund 4,8 Milliarden Busfahrten statt, nur noch rund 500 Millionen weniger als 2018 und 2019. Den größten prozentualen Zuwachs gab es im Sektor Eisenbahn und S-Bahn . Statt 1,7 Milliarden Fahrgästen im Jahr 2021 benutzten 2022 etwa 2,4 Milliarden Menschen die entsprechenden Verkehrsmittel. Transportmittelübergreifend liegen die Fahrgastzahlen noch etwa 14 Prozent unter dem Niveau von 2019. Die Einführung des Deutschlandtickets zum 1. Mai 2023 dürfte allerdings für einen weiteren Nutzungsschub in der zweiten Hälfte des aktuellen Jahres sorgen.
Bis vor dem Ausbruch der Corona-Pandemie waren die Fahrgastzahlen seit Jahren relativ konstant in geringem Maße gestiegen. Zwischen 2011 und 2019 hatten diese nur um etwa 700 Millionen zugenommen. Das spiegelt sich auch in der Aufschlüsselung nach den beliebtesten Verkehrsmitteln in Deutschland wider. 2021 entfielen in Deutschland im Modal Split des Personenverkehrs, also der Verteilung des Transportaufkommens auf Verkehrsmittel, etwa 87 Prozent auf den motorisierten Individualverkehr . Öffentlicher Straßenpersonenverkehr und Schienenpersonenverkehr waren für jeweils 6,1 Prozent des Verkehrsaufkommens verantwortlich.
