Etwa acht Prozent der 2022 von KfW Research befragten Inhaber:innen von mittelständischen Unternehmen planen mit ihrem Ruhestand die Stilllegung des Betriebes – weitere elf Prozent ziehen eine Betriebsschließung in Erwägung.
Etwa die Hälfte der Befragten mit Rückzugsplänen würde das Unternehmen gerne im Familienbesitz behalten – ein Wunsch, an dem es häufig scheitert, wie die Statista-Grafik zeigt. Unter allen Befragten, die vorhaben ihr Unternehmen in Zukunft stillzulegen, nannte rund die Hälfte ein mangelndes Interesse seitens der Familie als Grund.
Eine erfolglose beziehungsweise zu aufwendige Suche nach einer Nachfolge sind für jeweils rund 19 Prozent ausschlaggebend. Weitere Ursachen für die Nachfolgelücke sind etwa zu viel Bürokratie (29 Prozent) oder momentane Geschäftssituationen, die einen Verkauf verhindern (14 Prozent). Oft ist es dahingehend eine schlechte wirtschaftliche Lage, die eine Übernahme der Geschäfte für Nachfolger:inne unattraktiv macht.
Nicht jede:r Geschäfstführende strebt indes eine Nachfolge an – für rund 48 Prozent der Umfrageteilnehmer:innen mit Stilllegungsplänen bedeutet der Ruhestand bewusst auch das Ende des Unternehmens. Die Nachfolgelücke und vermehrte Betriebsschließungen dürften in den kommenden Jahren an Brisanz gewinnen. Aktuell sind bereits 31 Prozent der Unternehmer:innen 60 Jahre und älter. Das sind rund 1,2 Millionen und damit etwa dreimal so viele wie noch vor 20 Jahren.
