Der in Russland lebende Michail Matwejew soll in den vergangenen Jahren mit sogenannter Ransomware Lösegeld von Strafverfolgungsbehörden und anderen Regierungseinrichtungen sowie von Krankenhäusern und Schulen verlangt haben. Das teilte laut der Deutschen Presse-Agentur das Justizministerium in Washington mit. Die Klagen wurden im Bundesstaat New Jersey und im District of Columbia veröffentlicht.

Dabei werden in der Regel die Daten verschlüsselt und nur nach Zahlung eines Lösegelds wieder zugänglich gemacht.

Insgesamt gebe es Tausende Opfer, darunter Bürger in den USA und in anderen Teilen der Welt. Matwejew habe 400 Millionen Dollar (368 Millionen Euro) von seinen Opfern gefordert, 200 Millionen seien tatsächlich gezahlt worden. Das US-Außenministerium setzte eine Belohnung von bis zu zehn Millionen US-Dollar für Hinweise zur Ergreifung des mutmaßlichen Täters aus.
