Die Deutschen reisen gerne und viel. Bei der Auswahl ihrer Reiseziele im Ausland sind sie dabei offenbar wenig flexibel, wie die Statista-Animation auf Basis von Daten des Statistischen Bundesamts vermuten lässt. So liegen Österreich und Italien über den betrachteten Zeitraum hinweg immer an der Spitze der Länder, in welche die Bundesbürger am häufigsten reisen. Außerdem sehr beliebt und immer auf den vorderen Plätzen: Spanien, Frankreich und die Türkei.
Die Animation zeigt ebenfalls sehr eindrücklich, wie die Reiseaktivität der Deutschen aufgrund der Corona-Krise in den Jahren 2020 und 2021 stark zurückging. Diese Entwicklung zeigte sich auch an den Reiseausgaben der Deutschen. Im Jahr 2019 gaben die Deutschen insgesamt noch rund 73,1 Milliarden Euro für Urlaubsreisen aus, im Jahr 2020 lagen die Gesamtausgaben bei lediglich rund 45 Milliarden Euro.
Die Top-Reiseziele befinden sich alle im europäischen Ausland, wie die Animation ebenfalls zeigt. Fernreisen spielen nämlich eine eher untergeordnete Rolle: So haben sich im Jahr 2019 nur 17 Prozent der deutschen Urlauber für eine solche Reise entschieden. Der Einfluss der Corona-Krise hat diese Zahl noch einmal deutlich reduziert: Im Jahr 2020 haben sich nur noch rund 6,5 Prozent der deutschen Touristen und im Jahr 2021 7,4 Prozent für ein Fernreiseziel entschieden.
Die reisefreudigen Deutschen sind aber nicht nur gerne im Ausland unterwegs, sondern auch im eigenen Land. Bei einer repräsentativen Umfrage zu den geplanten Reiseziele für das Jahr 2022 gab etwa jeder Dritte an, innerhalb Deutschlands Urlaub machen zu wollen. Zu den begehrtesten innerdeutschen Reisezielen nach Bundesländern gehören Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Bayern.
