Christiano Ronaldo hat Lionel Messi als bestbezahlten Sportler der Welt abgelöst. Durch seine Vertragsunterschrift beim Saudi-Klub Al-Nassr FC konnte er seinen Jahresverdienst nochmals deutlich pushen und mit Werbegeschäften sowie Investitionen neben dem Sport an seinem ewigen Rivalen vorbeiziehen. Rund 136 Millionen US-Dollar hat der Portugiese seit Mai 2022 verdient – Lionel Messi bringt es im gleichen Zeitraum aus 130 Millionen.
Doch das Kräfteverhältnis könnte sich schon bald wieder zu Messis Gunsten verschieben. Der Argentinier wird nämlich mit einem Wechsel in die Saudi Pro League in Verbindung gebracht. Medienberichten zufolge soll ihm ein Angebot des “Königsklubs” Al-Hilal über 600 Millionen US-Dollar vorliegen. Sollte es zur Unterschrift kommen, würde das Messi wieder an die Spitze des Rankings katapultieren. Zudem würde die ewige Fehde zwischen Ronaldo und Messi auch wieder auf dem Spielfeld stattfinden, wenn sich Al-Nassr und Al-Hilal in der Liga begegnen.
Den dritten Podiumsplatz teilen sich im diesjährigen Forbes-Ranking Messis PSG-Kollege Kylian Mbappé und Basketballstar LeBron James mit Einnahmen von jeweils 120 Millionen US-Dollar in den letzten zwölf Monaten. Letzgenannter erwirtschaftet jedoch anders als Mbappé den Großteil seines Einkommens neben dem Basketballplatz – allen voran durch seinen Schuh-Deal mit Ausrüster Nike.
Das Extrembeispiel dafür ist Roger Federer: Die Tennisikone hat seinen Schläger im vergangenen September endgültig an den Nagel gehängt. Dennoch bleibt Federer eine beliebte Werbefigur, was ihm Einkünfte in Höhe von 95 Millionen US-Dollar seit Mai 2022 eingebracht hat. Das verhilft ihm zu Platz neun im Ranking, weshalb er es in diesem Jahr erstmals nur knapp nicht in die Infografik geschafft hat.
Spitzenverdiener durch den Sport sind 2023 Boxer Canelo Álvarez und die beiden US-Golfer Dustin Johnson und Phil Mickelson, die jeweils rund 100 Millionen US-Dollar im Ring und auf dem Grün verdient haben.
